<lyllian.teles@gmail.com>
This work had the general aim of analyzing the practical applicability of the Gestalt Therapy,
considering its origins and its branches, which carry its epistemological, philosophical and theoretical
bases. As a consequence, this monograph shows how Gestalt sees mankind in its relationship with the
world and presents the concept of transphenomenal as stated by Kohler. Therefore, the specific
objectives of this work are to investigate the epistemological boundaries between objectivity and
subjectivity among science and Psychology; to emphasize, by means of the exploitation of Gestalt’s
conception of the person-world, the equivalences and ambivalences which exist among Gestalt
Psychology and Gestalt Therapy, while keeping in mind its philosophical assumptions, Phenomenology,
Existentialism and Humanism; in addition, this work aims to identify, through Kohler's concept of
transphenomenal, what is the meaning of the Gestalt’s person-world concept in the production of
knowledge and in clinical practice. This monograph discusses the epistemological origin of Psychology
and the Gestalt approach and the types of science (explanatory and comprehensive) as well as its
methods of investigation, which encompass the objectivity and subjectivity dichotomy. After that, this
work discusses briefly the three main branches of Psychology – Psychoanalysis, Behavioral Psychology
and Humanistic Psychology –, in order to properly locate Gestalt therapy, epistemologically, and its
person-world conception. This monograph also presents the epistemological bases, philosophical and
theoretical assumptions of Gestalt Therapy in order to deepen the understanding of its person-world
conception. This research is bibliographic, qualitative and analytical-critical. Google Scholar’s database
was used with the objective of gathering material to be analyzed. Three scientific papers which presented
and described the intervention of a psychotherapist on specific demands related to mental or psychic
disorders. Two of them have used the Gestalt Therapy perspective. The other was based on the PersonBased Approach. The methods of analysis utilized here were the Content Analysis Methodology and the
Philosophical Pragmatism. Based on the Content Analysis, three categories were defined: 1) Objectivity
and subjectivity: the single-subject in Psychology; 2) Ambivalences and equivalences of Gestalt’s
perspectives on being in the world; and 3) Transphenomenality: the single-subject and the clinical
practice of Gestalt-Therapy. This work demonstrated how Psychology has becoming closer of the human
reality in order to study the former and, posteriorly, to intervene on it. Thus, according to the results
found in the course of this research, we concluded that a science committed to the human phenomenon
should seek to understand the later from itself in its totality, as well as its intentional existence and
relationship with the world.
