Abstract

There are basically two modes of LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) emission, discussed in the literature: the “conventional laser” and the “random laser”. The conventional laser is generated by trapping a beam of light between two mirrors and making it pass through a certain medium of gain (crystal, dust, gas ...) that emits light efficiently. As the beam of light is reflected back to the gain medium because of the reflectivity of the mirrors, new beams of light of the same wavelength are generated and, thus, the light escapes through one of the mirrors with great intensity. The amplification of light by stimulated emission has already been considered in previous works written by Einstein. In addition, there is also the MASER, which follows the same principle as the laser but with microwaves. The other type of stimulated emission, investigated in the literature, are the Random Lasers (RLs). RLs differ from conventional lasers in that optical feedback is not provided by mirrors, but by scattering particles randomly distributed in the gain medium, i.e., a laser without an optical cavity. This second type of laser, proposed theoretically by Letokhov on 1967, generated great interest in the scientific community, mainly from its first unambiguous demonstration in 1994 by Lawandy and collaborators. From many investigations on these lasers, a phenomenon has attracted the attention of scientists: the “fluctuations of intensities”, observed in experimental realizations under same identical conditions. In this work, we review some findings about the intensity fluctuations of random lasers, both in the experimental and theoretical context. From here, we show in an experimental and computational way that some characteristics shown in random lasers can also be found in the conventional lasers, such as output intensities fluctuations. With that, we report for the first time, the Lévy flights for ordered lasers and the Lévy-Pareto Law for the same system. We carry out such studies experimentally and numerically through Monte Carlo simulations. We were then able to show that the transitions of statistical regimes hitherto reported for random lasers, “Gaussian-Lévy-Gaussian”, also occur for conventional lasers, where that is an ordered regime. Finally, we report what are the parameters responsible for the statistical and experimental observations of the fluctuations in the output intensity of the lasers.
