Diante disso, a presente pesquisa,
The consolidation of human activities and the increase in population, together with their
purchasing power, has fostered the uncontrolled increase in the generation of solid waste and
the consumption of energy from non-renewable sources. In view of this, this research carried
out a theoretical survey of the energy potential of urban solid waste, using biogas produced in
a municipal sanitary landfill, as a renewable source of clean energy, as well as contributing to
the reduction of pollutant gas emissions. The study was carried out at the landfill in the
municipality of Maceió, located in the State of Alagoas, for which the method used was the
software developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the LandGEM Model 3.02
- Landfill Air Emissions Model, a theoretical model of estimation as a tool for forecasting the
volume of methane to be generated and emissions data for the main gases generated by the
anaerobic decomposition of solid urban waste between the years 2010 and 2035. A volume of
gases corresponding to 64 was found in the landfill, 5 million m³ / year and the main
components of biogas, including methane gas with 32 million m³ / year, carbon dioxide 32
million m³ / year, non-methane organic compounds - NMOC with 257,300 m³ / year. the energy
generated is directly proportional to the flow of biogas in the landfill, with the maximum power
in 2026 of 10.87 MW and the generation of electric energy of 208.77 MWh / day or 75156.31
MWh / year. However, considering the energy potential of methane for the coming years in the
period from 2021 to 2035, a volume of 39.2 million m³ will be produced, equivalent to 132.49
MW of available accumulated power, sufficient to serve approximately 250 thousand homes.
Therefore, the use of biogas proved to be an excellent alternative for electricity generation, the
use of which minimizes environmental impacts, mainly due to the emission of GHGs,
minimizing the effects of global warming.
