Abstract

Much has been discussed about power relations and violence in general, but little has been discussed about a specific type of violence, psychological violence. Because it is implicit and goes unnoticed within the various social contacts, it turns out to be neglected even by the academic literature, in view of the very few writings about it. Self-esteem, in turn, is one of the first aspects of the individual to be affected by psychological violence, as it involves the criteria of self-image and self-worth that the individual builds throughout life. That said, this work aimed to carry out scientific research on the self-esteem of women in situations of psychological violence, based on real reports, collected from the life history method. For this, a qualitative study was carried out from the perspective of Gestalt-Therapy. It was intended, through this, to understand the elements inherent to the phenomena in question to discuss the following problem: How is the self-esteem of women who have suffered psychological violence affected by this experience? And what are the consequences of these affectations for their lives? As a result of this research, it was evidenced that the respective experiences of psychological violence gradually diminished the autonomy, self-image and self- concept of the participants, negatively interfering in the construction of healthy self-validations and enhancing psychological suffering to the point of triggering episodes of panic, anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation.
