The theme of this study is the work of the social worker in the face of the demands of chronic renal nephropathy: a look at the reality of Palmeira dos Índios. Its main purpose is to understand the practice of the social worker in this socio-occupational space. The method used is Karl Marx's historicaldialectical materialism, which seeks to understand reality through successive approximations, and the methodology is bibliographical and documentary research. Following the direction of these three dimensions, the results obtained show that social work in the area of high-complexity healthcare, in this specific case in a nephrology sector, seeks to defend the ethical-political project of the profession and consequently the affirmation and defense of public, quality and universal healthcare, as a responsibility of the state. When analyzing the dynamics of the CDR, it was possible to see that in this institution there is a noticeable lack of knowledge among the patients about their rights, as well as among their family members/carers in relation to their rights, especially in relation to social security, most of whom are unaware of the benefits they receive and even why they receive them, whether it's a continuing benefit (BPC), sickness benefit or disability pension.
