Popcorn maize stands out as a crop of high commercial value, presenting potential for expansion in different agricultural regions of Brazil. The increase in consumption and the expansion of commercialization opportunities in national and international markets have stimulated interest in its cultivation. However, the adoption of this crop in new producing areas still requires research to evaluate its adaptation and agronomic performance under different environmental and management conditions. The present study aimed to evaluate the growth of popcorn maize under different planting densities in a twin-row system. The experiment was carried out under field conditions, under rainfed conditions, at the Federal University of Alagoas, Arapiraca Campus. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, in a split-plot arrangement over time, with four replications. The treatments consisted of different plant spacings in the twin-row arrangement (20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 cm) and evaluation times (20, 40, 60, and 80 days after emergence – DAE), corresponding to the phenological stages V6, V8, R1, and R4, respectively. At each evaluation time, plant height (PH), stem diameter (SD), leaf length (LL), and leaf width (LW) were evaluated. No significant interaction was observed between the sowing density and evaluation time factors. The evaluation time factor showed a significant effect on all growth variables. PH presented the highest value at 72 DAE, reaching an estimated mean of 207.87 cm, between the R1 and R4 stages, a period characterized by ear development and grain filling. SD obtained the highest value at 38 DAE, with 21.8 mm, at the V8 stage, a phase of intense vegetative growth, coinciding with the highest accumulated rainfall volume (227.4 mm). LL reached its maximum point at 51 DAE, with a value of 83.65 cm, close to the R1 stage, the beginning of the reproductive phase. LW reached its maximum point at 59 DAE, obtaining a value of 8.78 cm, at the R1 stage. Regarding the density factor, PH and SD were the only variables that showed a significant effect. For PH, the highest value was observed at the 22 cm spacing, reaching a height of 121.71 cm. SD presented the highest value at the 40 cm spacing, with a diameter of 21.33 mm. The increase in popcorn maize plant population density increased plant height and decreased stem diameter. The biometric characteristics evaluated showed greater increments during the vegetative growth period of the popcorn maize plants.
